Researchers Are Working to Bring Oysters Back to Oyster Bay

Researchers are trying to reverse decades of oyster population decline in Oyster Bay.
The Town of Oyster Bay and Stony Brook University are collaborating on a project called “Putting the Oyster Back in Oyster Bay.”
Oyster populations have been hurt by overharvesting, habitat loss and declining water quality, leaving many historic oyster beds unable to recover naturally.
Researchers will study water movement, habitat suitability and oyster survival to determine where restoration efforts are most likely to succeed.
The initiative is supported by a $477,200 National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant and more than $308,000 in matching funds.
The long-term objective is to establish interconnected oyster reefs capable of sustaining themselves and supporting healthier coastal waters.

Inside Nassau County’s Marine Bureau
A specialized Nassau County police unit is responsible for keeping watch over hundreds of square miles of local waterways.
The Nassau County Police Department’s Marine Bureau operates nine patrol boats, generally staffed by two or three officers.
Its coverage area spans approximately 225 square miles of waterways, where officers conduct rescues, investigate incidents and enforce boating and speed regulations.
The unit also assists stranded boaters, checks required documentation and helps protect critical waterfront infrastructure.
Marine Bureau officers are also called upon to investigate reported shark sightings and other potential hazards to swimmers and boaters.
